israeli-born berlin based producer and dj omer debuts his first release on cocktail d amore with two offerings of celestial house. the title cut blends the sounds of the east with an immediately seductive atmosphere of bright melodies leaving the listener plenty of room to be transfixed through it s entirety. -dust- dives deeper to reveal a more melancholic mood built on a symphony of lush pads and swirling metallic percussion. on remix duties are the wonderfully quirky estonian duo ajukaja & andrevski who deliver an oddball re-imagining which sends the original into outer space as it gently builds to sparkling fervor only heard on the outskirts of galaxies. rounding out the release is man power with an acid tinged burner which explodes into en excitement of live percussion and pads leaving any dance floor in complete ecstasy.

after the debut release on do not sleep become a sure fire club hit, the ibiza party turned much loved house and tech label now has another weapon up its sleeve. the next release is from perel, is titled charles manson and features another standout remix from resident darius syrossian. perel is a berlin based dj, producer and vocalist who is quickly rising through the ranks. she has released both originals and remixes on o*rs before now, and has a robust house and techno infused sound that simply makes you want to dance. as a dj she is a regular at cool spots like farbfernseher and impresses here with what she serves up for do not sleep. the original is a chunky, no-nonsense house track with bouncy bass, subtle vocals and the sort of futuristic and soulful pads that help make it really stand out. it s a slick, well produced sound that is sure to make it into many top record bags in the coming weeks and months. the remix from darius is a subtle one that layers in some trance inducing vocals and extra breakdowns so as to really highlight the powerful effect of the drums each and every time they drop.

globetrotting dj and producer luca venezia, better known as curses, indulges in his nocturnal and romantic side, revealing a penchant for dark basslines. jetzt oder nie opens proceedings with a straightforward bass and infectious arpeggio line. sebastian voigt s reinterpretation keeps the focus in the deep techno territory, introducing a steady paced and anxious facet. stepping into an industrial influenced soundscape, power of darkness revolves around the hypnotic vocal hook, gradually transcending the listener into a late-night dancefloor trance. infinity maker plays on the mesmerising repetition of the initial coarse drum pads, resulting in a straight-up techno tool. the synth lead stays in the deep end, progressing to a beautifully dubby and atmospheric finale.

taking a brief detour from his normal abrasive distorted sound, pinion showcases his broad spectrum as an artist with the desire ep. the title track, desire (half measure),starts out of the gate with a thunderous half beat 808 coupled with a swinging hihat pattern that slowly works ethereal vocal slices into the forefront, accompanied with a modulating synth pad that evolves into a defining melody. the sister track, desire (full measure), has very similar characteristics as the original, but allowing a little more edge for the dancefloor to build on. the third original track, recollection shifts gears quite drastically with a 135 bpm stormer with enough soul and melody to make the uncharacteristically fast tempo seem inconsequential. last, comes kyle geiger on remix duties to round out the ep with a housier take on desire, but still enough bite to fit nicely into any techno set.

uysr029 is the closing chapter of remixes for satori s longplayer. crussen from norway kicks of with a pretty down beat mix of days without you which is pure fun for the morning hours. amsterdam based olaf stuut instead did a driving mix of the wishing spell crossing borders between techno and electronica. hraach from spain put big emotions into his bad looking trouble remix deep house with sensual strings. last mix is from underyourskin resident thomas atzmann who gave a very new danceable attitude to the greatest against the world.

we kick off the ep with the original mix that consists of the use of dulcet tones & floating synthetic elements. next, classic house legend brett johnson delivers a floor banger with his groundbreaking remix. and to end, pioneer arthur oskan takes a depth dive into creepy late night space.

benedikt frey crafts a musical aesthetic that (much like the esp institute) might only be seen in its true form from a birds-eye view—a whole greater than the sum of its parts. his playful indifference to genre specifics and pre-prescribed instrumentation or production techniques makes for a loose and refreshing collection of work, and this debut for the esp institute, the lobbyist, serves up an incongruous three tracks so bewildering and narcotic we’re already impatiently fiending for more. on side a, the title track is no less than a medieval assault. led by a stomping war drum and a blasting bass synth that might literally have caught the studio on fire, an erratic array of clanking percussion, hi-hats and cymbals push us into a sinister corner where his whispering chant grants us the smallest bit of humanity before continuing with the beating. on side b, cupids delight (ft tcb) and gravel both explore variations on beauty—the former in a blur of ghost-like vocals smeared in harmony across a low-slung machine drums, and the latter evoking a tropical affair gone psychedelic, complete with drawn-out disorienting marimba and ritual clave/tom arrangements. welcome home brother benedikt, what took you so long?

way back in 1996, at the height of the widely acknowledged golden period for electronic music, d-saw a.k.a andré winter released a true classic on hamburgs highly influential superstition label. track 10:30 stood the test of time, becoming widely regarded as a key moment in european techno music history, despite its modest impact at the time. now, 20 years later, andré revisits the source material courtesy of some killer remixes on oliver huntemanns senso imprint. hamburg’s own h.o.s.h. in the space of two short years shlømo has quickly established himself alongside the likes of marcelus, bambounou, francois x and the antinote records crew as a key figure in paris’ current techno generation. having established his own taapion records label in 2013 and built a roster around a core of local producers including roman poncet, pvnv and antigone, in addition to enlisting stephen brown, conforce and sterac as remixers for the label’s releases so far. for its fifth release, bright sounds - run by fellow parisian kennedy smith - revisits last year’s rechaïm ep (bsrx003), with a trio of remixers offering their own takes on shlømo’s established deep and expansive sound. first up is the aforementioned 50 weapons artist bambounou, who offers a dynamic groove-based version of the title track that bounces along an elastic kick drum with cut-up fragments of the original’s atmospheric pads providing further impetus. label owner kennedy smith takes on theory is the worst by bringing its dub textures to the for while filling the track’s empty spaces with intricate drum patterns. finally, italian techno pioneer donato dozzy turns grounded queen into a classic dozzy slow-burning techno trip, with his trademark layered sound complimenting the track’s subtle rhythmic backbone.

keeping up the urgent pace set by the strength in numbers collection, thema now turns to a modern master of the jakbeat, d’marc cantu. hailing from ann arbor on the fringes of detroit, cantu has worked for more than a decade developing a sound that carries the torch from the box jam originators of techno and house music. his first appearances were alongside the mighty tadd mullinix (better known as james t. cotton) with their 2 am/fm project, before bringing traxx into the fold for the x2 venture. as a solo artist cantu has shored up on labels as highly regarded as crème organization, m>o>s, nation and desire, bringing a rich, full-bodied sound laden with powerful synth hooks, crafty drum programming and a live, jammed-out delivery that overflows with imagination. given his adventurous tendencies and punchy midwestern finish, cantu is a perfect fit on thema and the six tracks that make up this record show a great deal of the diversity the man is capable of, from dancefloor burners to atmospheric introspections.

for our 9th instalment, holdie gawn takes the lead and is delivering his first solo ep for sylphe, while micawber takes a break. on the a-side, holdie gawns natural habitat, we find yborg, a 12 minute long piece of darker, glitched-up techno which moves slowly yet forcefully. expanding into a terrain of bleeps and dissonant harmonies, ‘’yborg’’ number remains loyal to the twisted sylphe electronics we have been used to. on the b side we have t & t, a rolling, broken beat swingy techno-house jam which grooves effortlessly and shows a different of holdie. wonky, bubbling basslines and stretched voices complete the mosaic of holdie’s the first b side. our 9th release will be out in time for our 3rd birthday, around mid-late february

nicola ratti holds a rich history in the world of experimental and minimalist composition, having released music under his own name on labels such as kning disk, anticipate, preservation, holidays, and senufo editions and in recent times concentrating his energy into his collaborative project ‘bellows’, work which has seen the light thanks to entr’acte records and most recently boomkat editions. his latest solo work ‘pressure loss’ finds ratti at a potential turning point in his musical career, exploring rhythm and tonality with a new vigour, in a way which embraces the fluid and consistently evolving modern world of electronic music, yet still references a history of electronics, limiting his sound palette to work only using the serge and arp modular synthesizer.

turning into the home stretch, figure hands the penultimate release of its spc-series to an anonymous yet auspicious talent.on his first output under the ubx127 guise, the producer reveals his wares, combining classic bleep techno with just the right dose of acid. the four driving tracks thrive on their distinct synth-modulations, each scurrying atop a firm groundwork of brooding basses. apparent analogue sequencing pervades the whole ep, infusing it with a feeling of constant motion and liveliness.

on soma ep warszaw based duo mech installs four tracks in the cryptic reduced style of thomas brinkmann’s max/ernst series. the guys deliver an audio work production on resopal that hovers among forms such as techno, minimalism, and ambient. on all four tracks the elements are limited but the output bounces and rattles within - moving and exploring into more experimental zones of minimalism like plastikman, brinkmann, or former mille plateaux. a damn solid four tracker whether you know the math or not.

with ceres, rebecca von kalinowsky marks her first release on rote liebe. an athmospheric and bass-heavy offering, this one-sided vinyl will fit into techno and half-step settings alike.

yachting club, if the name evokes a leisurely walk on the deck of a boat, the first ep of yxc reveals the depth of an imaginary journey that does not lack elegance. released in september 2015, captain s memories invites us to a timeless journey into the intricacies of sound, which combines, post industrial clatter of a fantastic boat, unceasing sea rolls, and the harmonies of souvenir.the slow and hypnotic groove, between brokenbeat, abstract, downtempo and film music gives way to reverie but often reveals a delicate nostalgia. quick descriptions of tracks : “havre” describes the encounter between our main character and a local tribe, the broken beat leaves places to their chant both welcoming and threatening.“ancient horror”. on a disturbing 90’s hip hop beat, synths and brass sample narrates the epic fight between the captain and a mythical beast. “captain’s memories”: this beatless track, punctuated by agonizing strings invites us to journey with the captain’s nostalgia, the sea he traveled, the women he met..

mono junks dum records has been dictating trends in the world of minimalistic techno since the 1990s, and its 34th release is as special as any. this one comes from label boss kimmo rapatti aka mono junk vs mesak, who is better known as fellow finn, tatu metsätähti, aka one half of mr velcto fastener and someone who has released on dexter & steffis klakson. together the pair serve up three mixes of their jam and an additional track. title track deep in my mind is a paranoid techno cut with freaky vocal riffs repeating the title as gurgling synth lines and sleek drums rumble below. twitchy synths and high pressure perc add to the hypnotic effect, and overall its easy to see this one making for some perfectly weird dance floor moments. the mix by mono junk is completely the opposite: in his hands it is a beat-less, serene and beautifully styled electro cut that takes you deep into brain soothing space. the electro mind version is then a full on electro jam, with plenty of aqueous synths and fluid lines all squiggling along in classic detroit style. final track sysdrum is back to the raw, with angsty drum lines, crisp and slapping snares and oodles of reverb all making for a brain frying trip.

raam is back with a killer ep where he moves deeper into his gritty and heavy soundscape. raam 004 is solid release with influences from both detroit and chicago. alvar is a straight up chord driven banger, with classic 909 drum patterns. on the flip you will find unfold, which is a warm, spaced out chicago track, reminiscent of boo williams. brink has that magic disco flair, woofing basses and sparkling pads create a shimmering atmosphere. this track is perfect to play whenever

heard on “melancholia” are interpretations of honzo’s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener “orientalism” said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam’s “adhan” (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of “orientalism”, soaked in “hüzün” (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of “moral masochism” is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep’s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, “lovesickness” presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans – all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the “moral masochism” original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original’s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia’s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer “emptiness” explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person’s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, “emptiness” sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.
